Apprenticeship Overview...caring for the elderly -

There are two main pathways to choose between in this Apprenticeship...

Adult Social Care:
Providing care and support in homes or out in the community to those with diagnosed individual needs; for example, those with learning disabilities, those who are mentally or physically impaired, older people and any other person(s) requiring additional help to complete tasks. This may involve collecting shopping, assisting with personal care and hygiene, preparing and cooking food as well as household chores and everyday tasks such as changing bedding and cleaning. Job titles may include:

  • Personal Care or Reablement Assistant
  • Domiciliary Care or Home Support
  • Mental Health or Substance Misuse Worker

Health Care:
Work in hospitals, private clinics or in the community at hospices etc. Support doctors and nurses, aid and assist patients with any requirements or comfort requests they may have. This could be by serving food, helping to wash, dress and mobilise people and by monitoring patients' conditions (taking temperatures, pulse, weight and respiration). Job titles may include:

  • Clinical Support Worker
  • Healthcare Assistant
  • Midwifery Assistant

 

On completion of this Apprenticeship, you will be able to undertake the necessary range of duties when you work within the adult social care sector or for some workers in the health sector. Both pathways can lead to professions with:

  • The National Health Service (NHS)
  • Private Providers
  • Local Authorities
  • Voluntary Organisations

The values and attitudes of people working in health and social care must always be of a kind, caring and friendly nature, allowing clients / patients to feel comfortable and at ease in your care. Employers seek a well-trained, competent workforce who individually are motivated to succeed; who are positive, outgoing, non-judgemental and have good practical interpersonal skills and respect for the people using the services. A certain level of physical fitness is required to execute some tasks such as moving and handling people.

A driving license may be considered necessary by some employers

The Salary


Starting salary £11,000 - £17,000
(once qualified)

  • Level 2. Intermediate Apprenticeship in Health and Social Care
  • Level 3. Advanced Apprenticeship in Health and Social Care
